Dear friends from the Jurong Spring Youth Club,

Please join me in congratulating and thanking theChairman and members of our 11^th YEC for a job well done, and fortheir hard work and contribution to the activities of Jurong Spring CommunityClub over the past 2 years. During their term, they worked closely with othergrassroots organisations to organise community activities such as theChildren’s Christmas Party, the Jurong Spring CC Open House, the Mid-AutumnFestival Celebrations, and durian tours, among many others. They have also setup Interest Groups such as balloon sculpturing and K Pop dance.

The PA Youth Movement (and by extension every YEC) playsan important part in nation building and community bonding. It has four keyfunctions: (1) to promote social cohesiveness, national consciousness andnational pride among our young people; (2) to channel youth energies toconstructive pursuits; (3) to foster leadership qualities and organisingabilities among our youth; and (4) to promote friendship and understandingamong youth at national and international levels.

I have met many young Singaporeans over the past fewmonths who are keen to serve the less fortunate in Jurong Spring. There areequally many youth who have constructive and thoughtful ideas, not only aboutimproving our living environment, but also about policies that can better thelives of all Singaporeans.

I encourage the incoming 12^th YEC to tap thisspring of energy and imagination to achieve 3 objectives: (1) to serve the lessfortunate in our community with compassion and quiet dedication, (2) toorganise programmes and activities that can help our residents and our youthbetter themselves and strengthen body and mind, and (3) to give our youth an effectivechannel to express themselves actively and constructively.

I look forward to working with you, side by side, tobuild a better Jurong Spring.

Youth Executive Committees

The PA Youth Executive Committee (YEC) is the managing body for the Youth Group in a Community Club. Reaching out to youths, our YEC organises a wide range of activities and projects ranging from sports and recreation to culture, arts and community service.

The role of YECs include:

(a) Developing programmes for youths and setting up subcommittees to implement its activities
(b) Working closely with the Community Club Management Committee and other grassroots organisations in putting together community development projects; and
(c) Connecting with other Youth Clubs and the Council to support the People’s Association Youth Movement (PAYM)

Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner @ Jurong Spring CC

On the 2nd day of Lunar Chinese New Year, all grassroots leader in Jurong GRC (Jurong Group Representation Constituency) were treated to a thanksgiving-cum Chinese-New-Year get-together dinner in appreciation of our efforts for the past 1 year. Mr Lim Boon Heng personally welcomed all guests and participants, extending warm handshakes to all those who arrived at the hall.

As joyful Gong Xi Fa Cai greetings were exchanged, the dinner started promptly at 8pm. A couple of us from Jurong Spring CC YEC, got together to join in the celebration.

The climax of the programme was when one of our Jurong Spring staff - Carol wowed us with her hidden talent and glamourous performance.

The Midnite Cats gather at Friday evenings for a “Night is Still Young” Friday nightout. First stop was at West Coast HONG KONG STREET Kopitiam. Oh my! It really amazes me to know that some of our female members are really good eaters! I wonder how were they able to keep their figures….

After a *burp* sorry… after a sumptuous dinner, the lot of us moved on to West Coast Recreation Centre for a BOWL-OUT showdown. Hehehe… no lah,we are not experts at all. It’s a chance to show each other how good were we at cleaning out the Longkangs down the bowling alley.
I would dare say, the only few decent bowlers were Boon Chong & Hock Lai. What about me? Well, I dun really care about scores… I am only concentrating on my STYLE… hahaha.. so you should ave guessed, my points are way UNDER!!

I really gotta give compliments to the whole team. Although most of us are super amateurs, or even First Timers in bowling, all of us had a wild time laughing at the miss-shots and longkang skills. We had a fair bit of cheers and roars when Strikes & Doubles & Turkeys flashes on the screen!

Unknowingly, it’s already 10pm, and Ding Dong…. Our next stop on the itinerary is… SUPPER! Yah! We hear some groans… “huh? Makan again??” hahaha…. Yeah man! Prata at Bukit Timah is next!

We ate, we drank, we gossiped, we burped… oops. Too vivid! And the Elderly like Cheng Hoon, Lay Pheng, Boon Chong, Swee Leng, PeiLin decided to call it a day. Oh my gosh! It’s still early! It’s only 1am!
So, the rest of us continue with the 2nd leg of the excursion.

Yeap, Me, Hock Lai, Run Xin, Raye, Nura, WeiJun are still surviving. Telok Blangah Hill! Here we come!

Beep Beep Beep… yawn… yesh, most of us are running low on energy already, we ended our “Night is still young” excursion at about 430am. We had a wonderful time exploring the much less visited places in the western area. Had a fair chance of pampering our tummy with sinful food! Hahaha

Road Show by SMU - Exhibition on Stroke Awareness

This exhibition is a project raised by student from SMU doing on the module leadership and teambuilding.leaders enrolled in the Leadership Teambuilding (LTB) course engage in a large-scale community service project, giving them hands-on, real-life experiences that facilitate the learning of team dynamics, situational leadership, negotiation and communication skills.

For this their topic is set on stroke awarness. Their objective is to raise awarness to the public for stroke and with that hopefully it will reduce the impact of stroke on our community. Stroke is reversible if identified within the first 3hr.

they had initially work with a hospital but the person in charge is on long term leave so as a result they have to find a new location for their event and they send out mass email to all the CC. Iris which is one of my friend is had approach me upon knowning that i have been in the grassroots for sometime and this is the start of all collabration

during the event itself, many of the public especially residents from the mid 40s to the 80s had actually been able to understand more about stroke through the brochues and exhibition placed in the cc during the morning prime time for the market nearby

some of them were very thankful that they have a chance to learn all these right in the heartland which is right at their doorstep, in jurong spring CC. All the brochues and flyers in two languages english and chinese so the senior citizen can also get a chance to read up on stroke and prevention.

a complimentary health screening is provided for the residents who came for the exhibition and they were advised on their lifestyle (too high sugar intake , smoking, drinking and high blood pressure etc). These will help them change their lifestyle to a better one and tell them their risk of getting stroke. On average, there will be 1 resident who came for the exibition and health screening every
2 and a half min.

Jurong Spring YEC by providing the logistic and venue support is very fortunate and grateful that the collbration bring in a win win situation for the residents and as well as to allow students to be able to complete their coursework. We welcome more collabrations with schools and even tertiary insitutions to approach us in having a collabration event that will benefit our youth and community.

Wellness Programme

16th January 2008 saw many participants arriving at Jurong Spring Community Club for the NTUC Eldercare Wellness Programme Briefing held in the Mini-Theatre at 8pm.

After dinner and friendly conversations at the Reception Area provided by jsYEC, participants proceeded to the Mini Theatre for the event.

Chun Kiat, chairman of jsYEC, was the MC of the day. The session started off with Dr Carol Tan, Deputy Director MCYS and Senior consultant Geriatrician, discussing the background of the elderly in Singapore, explaining the meaning of 'Wellness' as well as highlighting the importance and benefits of joining the Wellness programme. Ms Melissa Chan, Wellness Programme Development In-Charge, then took over the latter part of the session to explain the objective, structure and other details of the Wellness Programme.

The Wellness Programme is designed to draw up activities for seniors within the community which are senior centric, holistic, diverse and able to engage increased participation from not just the elderly but also volunteers, corporate supporters and social support groups. The idea of the Programme is to:
- Treat
- Teach
- Tell
the elderly through a series of sub-programmes ranging from Health Management Workshops, and Health Education Corner to Healthy Cooking Class and Exercise Groups.

The day's event ended off with an interactive Q & A session between the audience and the panel including Mr Tan Poi Eng, Mr Lim Boon Heng, Dr Carol Tan and Ms Lim Sia Hoe.

Airport T3 visit

30 over participants have joinned us to the pre open house of changi terminal 3 guided by our sports and reca sect woei luen. During this exciting and eyeopening trip, the participants have witness for themslves the interesting and majectic sights and features of changi airport terminal 3.

After this trip, our participants are proud to be among the other singaporean to have viewed the terminal 3 before it commence operation at 9 Jan 2008.

Our participants have a chance to see interesting features like the 919 skylight, Common Gatehold room, interesting tiolets such as air suction tiolet and witness for themselves a plane landing on the Singapore Runway. Through this trip, our participants have learn more about the newly opened terminal and as well as act though they were a real passegner walking through immigrants and wait for the flights in the gatehold room.

Truly, our participants have enjoys themeslves and lastly they have found fun and laughter together with us at terminal 3 . Jurong Spring YEC !

Farms Tour

In view of the School Holidays and the upcoming Christmas Day, we organised a Farms Tour on 23rd December 2007, Sunday to the following places:

Travelling in an air-con coach with guided tour coupled with free gift and lunch, the participants truly enjoyed themselves.

Project Home Run 2007

150 needy children from 4 Family Service Centers in Singapore in the Western part of Singapore congregated at Republic Polytechnic on 22nd Dec 2007, Saturday to relish the fun and games of the pre-Christmas Celebration jointly organised by the Youth Executive Committee (YECs) in the Northwest and Southwest Districts.

These children, aged between 6 and 12 years old, competed in a race which required them to complete tasks and collect puzzle pieces from various stations in order to complete the Big Jigsaw. The team which completes the stations in the shortest time recorded will emerge champion.

The objectives of the Project Home Run 2007 are to:
- raise awareness of volunteerism among youths
- inculcate independence and team work in the participants
- bring fun and joy during the holiday season to the participants

The children came from the following 4 Family Service Centers:
- Loving Hearts Multi-Service Center
- Clementi Student Service Center
- Touch Young Arrows
- CDAC Student Service Centers

The event was graced by Guest-of-Honour cum Project Adviser, Mr Liang Eng Hwa, Member of Parliament (MP) for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and Adviser to Holland-Bukit Timah GRC (Zhenghua).

The Team Banner Design and Amazing Race marked the opening of the day's event as the 16 teams raced against each other to complete 7 preliminary stations. The event ended with a Christmas celebration and Prize Giving Ceremony.

Station 1 : FIND IT ! --> Participants to find pieces of blue-coloured paper in the box containing song lyrics. Once they have all the pieces of paper, they are to arrange the words in order.

Station 2 : PASS IT ON ! --> Participants will pass a ball to each other using a Toy Racket held by their hand. Once the ball passes from start to end of the team queue, they will receive another puzzle piece.

Station 3 : MINEFIELD --> Participants will have to guide each other through a minefield. The person going through the minefield will be blindfolded and spun around 5 times. Mines are all coloured X's on the ground.

Station 4 : PASSING THE "BOMBS" --> Participants will have to pass the waterbombs down a line using only white towels and deposit the waterbombs into the red pail positioned at the end of each line.

Station 5 : SOLVE THE CROSSWORDS --> Participants will have to solve the crosswords within 10 mins

Station 6 : BUILD IT ! --> Participants are required to build the highest tower possible using only newspapers and scotch tape. Each tower has to stand for at least 10 seconds.

Station 7 : CHARADES --> Participants will be given 5 mins to solve 5 questions with movie themes. One representative from the team will act out the question for the rest to guess.

Majority of footages recovered
Thank God! After researching heavily on the Internet, I finally made some progress in fixing the broken AVI links with some great help from FAQs provided by computer gurus on the Net. Though not all the clips could be restored, I was still glad with what I could retrieve. At least not all our efforts had gone to waste…

Fixing each avi clip lasted for what seemed like eternity but the thought of recovering lost files made the wait worthwhile ...

Corrupted Video Files
2 A.M in the morning and I’m sitting in front of my house desktop. Not msning or playing computer games but doing some intensive recovering of corrupted video files from the filming of Project Home Run 2007...

I was shocked when this error message suddenly popped up. Apparently, the video files had been corrupted and disintegrated into .tmp files from avi format ...

Back from Republic Polytechnic, I was transferring out the video clips from the SD Cards into the desktop for editing when I realized almost half of the clips could not load properly! I was unable to determine the root cause of the broken AVI links, whether it was the laptop transferring process or the SD Cards. Anyway, it does not really matter at this point of time. I can only pray that the files could be recovered somehow or another…
Haiz . . . trying out on some other clips in the hope that some clips might be working but to no avail. Most practically cannot be opened . . .

Making of PROJECT HOME RUN 07 Vid ( Phase 1 ~ VIDEOGRAPHY )

Equipment Preparation
This year, Jurong Spring YEC IT Subgroup was placed in charge of filming Project Home Run 2007. The process was considerably tedious as we only had 2 people (myself and Weijun) to capture shots from around Republic Polytechnic. To worsen the situation, we did not manage to borrow a professional video camera and had to make do with a lower-end camcorder and a digital camera with built-in video-taking function.

Given the large campus of Republic Polytechnic, it was definitely a challenge for just 2 of us to go around capturing all the shots we needed. On top of that, we had to tackle the issue of different games ongoing at the same time at each station. We had to plan to film all stations so that the final video will look comprehensive.

As we were unable to get hold of professional video camera in time for the event, we had to rely on our Digital Camera with built-in Video-Taking function instead ... Casio Exilim EX S600. It performed fairly well, only that we had to take care of battery life and storage space.

Planning against Manpower Limitations

Fortunately, we had drawn up a concise plan of the videography of the day’s event so that we would not miss out on any major happenings. Thankfully, Weijun was there to help coordinate with me so that we could track most of the event’s flow. Even then, we had to constantly run from one location to another so that we could get hold of a variety of footages to make the video turn out well.

Given the Program Schedule of the day's event (above), Weijun and I promptly drafted out the our corresponding Video Plan (below)

We had to conceptualize the outlook of the final video so that we can effectively capture relevant footages. Our main idea was to:
1) Present background information of the event – participants involved and objectives of the event etc
2) Actual Game Play – string of clips of the children mingling with volunteers at the different stations
3) Celebrations and prize-giving ceremony
4) Photoslideshow

Weijun and I chose 1 Family Center each to follow the kids prior to the actual ceremony at Republic Polytechnic so as to track interesting happenings along the way.

Planning against Equipment Limitations
Equipment-wise, we ran the risk of inadequate storage space on the SD Cards and battery life unable to last the length of the event. In order to remedy the problems, we had to bring along a laptop to periodically transfer the recorded footages from the SD Cards to the laptop so as to free up space on the Cards. Low battery life posed yet another problem, so we had to equip ourselves with chargers to recharge our equipment during lunch hour when the activities stopped temporarily.

Running low on battery life was simply inevitable as we had to shoot for close to 7 hours in total. We thus had to periodically find plugpoints within RP as we move around the stations to recharge our equipment in order to continue with the filming.

Fujitsu Lifebook E8210 ... another equipment which came in handy... Especially because footages were shot at best resolution possibe, hence resulting in storage space of the SD cards being readily exhausted. Video files thus needed to be transferred into the laptop from time to time in order to free up space for continued shooting.

Limited to only 2GB space of video filming, we had to make use of the laptop to maximize the usage of the SD Cards for the entire day.

Throughout the 6-hour long event, I had to recharge and transfer about 3 to 4 times. Though tiring, we were glad to be a part of this meaningful event and to pick up some tips from the professional photographers engaged that day. As advised by James, the leader of the photography team, we should get more people to help film different areas next time, especially for such a big-scale project like this. Guess we pulled it off quite well despite the short-handedness…ha

In any case, it was a great learning experience. Proper planning definitely helps!

Bintan Weekend Getaway with YEC

We finally found time from amongst our busy schedule to come together for a 2-days, 1-night retreat at Bintan Lagoon Resort, Indonesia on October 20, 2007.

The 10th jsYEC

Following from the 10th Biennial General Meeting (BGM) of the Jurong Spring Club Youth Group held on 30th September 2007 (Sunday), the 10th jsYEC held its Office Bearer Meeting in the Conference Room of Jurong Spring Community Club at about 1.15pm.

Mr Yang Chang Jye, Assistant Manager of the Youth Movement, started the election by briefing on the each of the office bearer's and commitee member's role and responsibility. The committee came to a consensus of using the open voting system.

Chun Kiat was elected as the Chairperson of the 10th jsYEC while Run Xin and Hock Lai the 1st Vice Chairperson and 2nd Vice Chairperson respectively

jsYEC 10th BGM

The 10th Biennal General Meeting (BGM) of Jurong Spring Community Club Youth Executive Committee (jscc YEC) was held on 30th September 2007 at about 11.35am at Jurong Spring Community Club Movie Theatre, graced by the Guest of Honour, Mr Frankie Goh, BBM, and Chariman of Jurong Spring Community Club Management Committee and witnessed by a fair number of audience.

Minutes of the 9th BGM held on 8th October 2005 was presented to all members for approval and subsequently confirmed without amendment. What followed next were the presentation of:
(i) Youth Group Report- Details on the activities, courses, workshops and programmes organised by the 9th YEC
during their term of office
(ii) Financial Report
- Details on the Receipts and Payment Statement for the financial years from 1 April 2003 to
31 March 2005

Members then welcome the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Mr Frankie Goh, who was invited to present Tokens of Appreciation to the outgoing members of the 9th YEC. Following the dissolution of the 9th YEC, Mrs Wendy Lai was elected to be the Presiding Chairperson while 23 nominees were officially elected into the 10th YEC for a term of 2 years from 30th September 2007 to the next BGM date.

Led by Chun Kiat, Master-of Ceremony, members of the 10th YEC then recited the PAYM pledge together. Members of the audience were each given a complimentary GV movie ticket for their kind attendance and treated to a sumptuous buffet lunch as well as a free movie screening.

As promised by Chun Kiat, the 10th jsYEC promises more exciting line-up of activities and programmes for the community and look forward to your continued support.

Mid-Autumn Celebration

The Lantern Festival Celebration held on 23rd September 2007 at Jurong Spring Community Club was yet another fun-filled event which saw both children and adults enjoying themselves with the various activities lined up for them by Jurong Spring Community Club. ome of us took time off our Sunday to assist in the Lantern Procession and the Dengue Awareness Booth in addtion to distributing food and snacks for the performers of the Celebration.

Movie Trip for Old Folks

Our volunteers took time off their precious weekend to bring the old folks from the Bukit Batok Home for the Aged out for a movie at Golden Village Jurong Point.

" We want to let the Old Folks get some outdoor experience and to enjoy the comfort of the theatre instead of just being restricted to the Home. "

After assigning among ourselves 2 elderly to 1 volunteer, we led them up to Level 3 to enjoy the show. The movie probably meant more than just a 2-hour event to both the Old Folks and to the volunteers.

Just a few months back, the jsYEC was contemplating the idea of bringing the Old Folks out of the Home due to safety concerns but still we managed to pull it off with some proper organization and great effort on the part of our volunteers.
